Richard Lee Helmandottar

Forever Our Papa Bear

April 1st, 2026

Richard Lee Helmandottar, known to many as Lee Richards, a lifelong musician whose love of music touched countless lives, passed away on April 1, 2026.

Gifted, Loved, Cherished.

He was a gifted violinist and an all-around musician, known not only for his talent but for the joy and warmth he brought to every room he played in. He performed in multiple bands over the years and was a dedicated member of the praise and worship band at Crossroads Christian Fellowship of Kauai, Hawaii, where his music became a meaningful part of the community. Beyond performing, he was also a teacher, sharing his love of the violin with students and helping others discover their own connection to music.

Tie-dye and The Beach Boys

He was just as recognizable for his personality as he was for his music. He was often seen in Hawaiian shirts or tie-dye, driving his red VW bus, and listening to The Beach Boys. Those small, bright details are how many will remember him. Warm, a little nostalgic, and unmistakably himself.

More than anything, he will be remembered for the way he lived. Through music, through connection, and through the way he made people feel.

His Family

He is survived by his daughters, Noalani Helmandottar and Shannah McDermott (Blake); his sister, Patsy Imm (Daryl); his brother, Steve; and his beloved grandchildren, Anna, Kyndal, Hudson, and Xander.

His music, and the memory of it, will continue to live on in all who knew and loved him.
